Why doesn't the video/flash work?

There have been a large number of people that haven't been able to play videos or flash on idleriot.com. Instead of e-mailing everyone why or why not this may be this section was compiled so that it can aid you in figuring out the problem.

Our media is a large chunk of what our site is about. Naturally, we want to make sure you can view it the way it was meant to be viewed. Here's how to maximize your media enjoyment factor.
  • Downloads

    Windows Media Player

    Quicktime

    Flash Player 8

    Flv Player
Videos: Most of our videos are now in Flash format (.flv). We've built a player to play these right on the site, so all you need is the latest flash player. Click the link to the right to grab it.

If you'd like to download our newer videos, you're going to need a flash video player. Click here to download one.

Most of our older movies are in Windows Media format. Windows Media Player 9 should suffice, but 10 is great if you have it. It's free, and you can find a link to the player on the right

Some of our older clips are also in quicktime format. For these you need Apple's quicktime player which is also free. The link is to the right as well.
  • Images: Images are displayed right in your browser. You don't need any other plugins to view images.
  • Flash: Flash has done wonders for the internet, but you can't benefit from it if you cant see it! You need the macromedia flash player to vew our flash animations/movies/games. The newest version is usually best, so if you're not sure, chances are: it's time to upgrade. The link is found to the right.
  • General: This site is mainly created for people with broadband connections. Streaming videos and watching some of the larger flash animations can be a drag on a dial-up connection. Also, please refer to the minimum system requirements to run the Windows Media, Quicktime, and Macromedia Flash Players. These players are embedded in a browser and if you don't have the system resources to run these standalone, then chances are you may not have the resources to run them in the browser. Factors include: CPU speed, Ram, Available hard drive space and more.

I've got everything. Why won't it work now?

Relax, take a deep breath. Now, read on.
  • Media Server: Our media servers are very high-end servers that are constantly using very large amounts of bandwidth. From time to time that server can go down or become so clogged with traffic that it may seem like it IS down. If our media server is down, you won't be able to view media until it is back up. Your best bet at that point would be to check out our articles and specials and to also check the ticker and site news page for updated information.

The current status of the media server is: ONLINE

  • Buffering: A Common question we get is why flash videos play, then stop. Well just like windows media player, the video must buffer. With our player you can tell how much of the video is loaded by looking at the red line on the progress bar.
  • Try it locally: If a video still won't stream for you, try downloading it (if available) to your hard drive and playing it there. This approach usually fixes any problems caused by browser incompatabilities.
  • Contact us : If things still are going awry, feel free to drop us a line and explain your problem. Make sure to let us know what media you are trying to view (include a link if you can), your system info (browser, OS, connection speed), and any other pertinent info such as symptoms. Doing this not only helps you out, but also helps us offer a better product here at idleriot.
